Evaluation of PowerPoint on Thor!

On the day of the presentation I was off ill, so I wasn’t able to do it. However, I did contribute a lot towards the overall PowerPoint. Scala and I worked very well together on the sound analysis task. We had two films to choose from they were Pirates of the Caribbean 4 and Thor. We reviewed a five-minute scene from each to choose the section with the most sound. We decided that Thor was the best one to use because there was a lot of non-diegetic sound that we could analyse easily.
The information we gathered on the sound was mostly through listening very carefully and watching the track repeatedly, but we also got some of the information on the sound from the information.
When creating the PowerPoint we had to keep referring back to our glossaries so we could properly understand the different types of sound we had to analyse. I found it very helpful to have it there because we kept forgetting some of the meanings.
If we could do the PowerPoint again I would probably use Pirates of the Caribbean because although Thor had a lot of good and different types of sound effects it became a bit repetitive throughout the presentation. Pirates of the Caribbean would have been different sounds throughout the presentation. Also I haven’t actually watched Thor whereas I have watched Pirates of the Caribbean.
From this sound analysis task I have learned a lot about all the different types of sound that film producers and editors have to think about. It would take a long time to get all of the sound together and then edit it into the right place on the film.

  1. Group 3: Thor – Scala (and Molly not present)
    • Good background information that set the clip up well
    • Good list of diegetic and none diegetic sounds
    • Good description of ambient sounds and how the sound track enhanced this
    • Setting the scene, mood etc - a good detailed description of how the instruments used enhanced the sounds
    • Overall: All points covered – Merit
    • (note for future presentations, make sure you are prepared and bring everything you need i.e. the dvd)
